Bill, a Colorado native, was raised in Aspen in one of America's most famous skiing families. As a result, his whole life seemed directed toward skiing, and he rose quickly through the junior ranks. While a scholarship student at the University of Colorado, he became an "All-American" member of the world championship US Ski Team from 1962 to 1966. At the 1964 Olympics in Innsbruck, he finished 12th in giant slalom.
He was then named the University of Colorado ski team coach where he molded it into a dominant power, garnering seven NCAA championships during his 10-year tenure while coaching 30 All-Americans.
As Alpine Director of the United States Ski Team, he guided the team to five medals in the 1982 World Championships, and another five (including three gold) at the 1984 Olympics. Under his direction, American skiers won four individual World Cup Championships and 50 separate race victories. In 1976, he was voted an "Outstanding Young Man of America".
In 1984 he became the Athletic Director at the University of Colorado. He later was named as the U. S. Ski and Snowboard team director.
