Enos came to Estes Park as a teenager, built a cabin for himself at the foot of Longs Peak, and grew to become one of Colorado's outstanding mountain pioneers, criss-crossing the Rockies on both skis and snowshoes, and returning to his cabin to write of his observations along the way. He collected data on snow depth, weather conditions, and avalanches, and over the years produced numerous articles and a total of 16 books.

Beginning in 1909, Enos lectured, lobbied and wrote letters, expounding his dedication to the preservation of land for future generations. Six years later he saw his dream become a reality when 358 square miles of his beloved backcountry became Rocky Mountain National Park.

Poet, pioneer, and pathfinder, the spirit of Enos Mills lives on today in the hearts of all environmentalists and mountaineers.
