Keith, a native of Denver, began his skiing career at age three. His father, the late Al Wegeman, was an expert ski instructor, and Keith, along with his brother Paul, became one of Colorado's most versatile skiers.

Before he was 10, Keith was competing in both Alpine and Nordic events. He moved to Steamboat Springs when he was 14, and won the 1943 Colorado High School Alpine Championship. In 1947, he won the American Legion Western Junior three way meet in Sun Valley, Idaho, and the Southern Rocky Mountain Ski Association Class C Jumping Tournament.

In college, Keith was a member of one of Willy Schaeffler's legendary ski teams at the University of Denver. He won many honors and trophies over his four year career; including the Skol Award for outstanding intercollegiate Championships; membership on the 1950 and 1954 World Championship Special Jumping Teams and the 1952 Olympic Team (placing best among Americans). Other awards won by Keith in his competitive years were the F.D.R. Trophy, the Marcellus Merrill Trophy of Roses, the Lowell Thomas Trophy, the President's Cup at Sun Valley, and the Most Graceful Skier Award. For many years Keith held the American long distance jumping record of 416 feet at Obersdorf, Germany.

After college, he was an instructor in the US Army Mountain and Cold Weather Training Company. He later moved to Los Angeles and entered the television business where he emceed a program entitled "Ski Tips" for two years. He was also technical advisor to the 1960 Squaw Valley Olympic Committee.
