Bill Mahoney, Senior was born in Bonanza, CO and moved to Telluride at age four. He first skied Catholic hill with his brother, Bob, at age five, when they tied burlap bags around their skis to ease their uphill climb. He later hitched up a portable rope tow to a converted Nash car, which started the first skiing program for kids in the area.
He worked in the mines, and served a stint in the navy. Upon returning home, he pushed his vision of having a ski area there. He recruited experts like Ski Hall of Fame inductee Peter Seibert and world renowned ski coach Emile Allais, who gave the ski area good grades.
In the early 1960s he helped form the Telluride Ski Corporation, issued stock, with failed efforts. In 1968 Joe Zoline a wealthy Californian appeared, and offered assistance, naming Bill mountain manager. Bill has inspired hundreds of youngsters to enjoy skiing and to enter competition.
He has bettered the Colorado ski community through his efforts.
