Edna was born in Minnesota and was the daughter of Norwegian immigrants who, in 1936, became the first woman to join Professor Max Dercum's ski club at Penn State. As the Professor's wife, she became chairperson for the first Penn State Championships (1940) and the state downhill-and -slalom champion. (1941).
The Dercum’s moved to Colorado for good in 1945. In addition to raising two children at the family's Ski Tip Ranch near Montezuma, she managed the lodge, served as county clerk, and taught skiing at Arapahoe Basin.
About the time most ladies put away their skis, Edna got serious again about racing. She decorates her mountain home partly with skiing medals, over 50 of them gold, and most of them earned as a senior-class racer. At age 65 she was the oldest competing woman in the National Seniors and had been its giant slalom champ since 1955.
At age 65, as the oldest woman competitor in the world and giant slalom champ of the National Seniors since 1955, she collected a series of European medals, including World Cup gold’s in Italy and Switzerland.
