Hans was an active and dedicated volunteer to Colorado skiing from 1942-1969.  He was particularly active in the ski patrol, first aid and avalanche training and rescue, and Alpine and Nordic programs for junior skiers.

Hans joined the volunteer ski patrol in 1942.  Between 1944 and 1957 he served as Patrol Leader at Berthoud Pass; Leader of the Denver Metropolitan Ski Patrol; and Section Chief, Regional Chairman, and Divisional Chairman of the National Ski Patrol.  He taught first aid for ski patrollers for 25 years, and put his first-aid skills to use every weekend.  Hans also taught avalanche control and rescue.

In 1947, Hans became increasingly involved with  competitive skiing for Colorado junior skiers.  He became sponsor, driver and coach for the Junior Ski Club Zipfelberger, a certified referee, and a very good waxer for both Alpine and Nordic events.

As the Denver based ski patrol gave way to ski-area patrols, Hans joined the Winter Park Ski Patrol and Jumping School.  He became a National Jumping Judge and continued to inspire young skiers to become ski patrolmen, Alpine and Nordic competitors.
