Bob Beverly’s contributions to Colorado skiing started more than 45 years ago.  They range from promotion and development of recreational and competitive skiing throughout the Western Slope to the organization of and participation in numerous ski schools, ski patrols, ski areas and local, regional ski organizations.

Born in Steamboat Springs, Mr. Beverly took an early and active role in skiing (he was a member of the then-famous Steamboat Springs High School Band on skis) and started his career as an alpine ski racer.

After high school, Mr. Beverly went to the University of Denver (1941-1944); here he took an active role in the organization of collegiate ski racing.  His drive and enthusiasm for collegiate skiing spurred DU to adopt skiing as part of the school’s athletic department, and Mr. Beverly, after serving as racer/coach in 1953 and 1944, was honored with one of the first two collegiate athletic letters for skiing awarded by DU.

During the next 10 years, Mr. Beverly honed his many ski-related skills, trained as a ski instructor under Gordy Wren and was a pioneer in ski-area development on Grand Mesa and at Glenwood Springs. He was one of the original guiding lights for the Mesa Creek and the Grand Mesa ski areas, and still remains active on the Powderhorn Ski Resort Board of Directors.

Under his guidance, western Colorado gained a couple new ski areas and the sport of skiing gained many new supporters and friends.  Even while devoting many hours ski area development, he continued his active support of ski racing by organizing and officiating races and training new generations of ski officials across the Western Slope.

In 1953, Mr. Beverly saw his love for collegiate skiing become a reality when he, as National Ski Area Committee chairman and working with the National Collegiate Athletic Association, played a key role in obtaining the NCAA’s official sanction of skiing as an official intercollegiate sport.

Mr. Beverly continued to make substantial contributions to skier safety programs across the state.  He organized chapters and recruited members of the National Ski Patrol System at Glenwood Springs and Grand Mesa (now Powderhorn Ski Resort).  Among his other ski-area related accomplishments are the development of the Buddy Werner Ski League (with more than 200 young skiers) and the Mesa County School District 51 Learn-to-Ski program, both held at Powderhorn.  Both of these programs are vibrant and very successful, as well as very important in recruiting new skiers and snowboarders.

Mr. Beverly’s many contributions to skiing and ski racing were recognized in 1995 when he was awarded the Halstead Memorial Award by the Rocky Mountain Division of the United States Ski Association.  The award was given as a trophy for his devotion and lifetime dedicated to skiing in Colorado.
