The son of one of Colorado's ski pioneers, Thor ran his first gates at age nine and later competed in downhill, slalom, cross-country and jumping at Western State College.  He was a member of Ski Club Zipfelberger.

Skilled at officiating ski competitions, Thor became Chairman of the Certified Officials Association and co-authored the first timing manual for officials of the Rocky Mountain Division.  He was Chief of Alpine Calculators at the 1960 Squaw Valley Olympics and Chief Steward for the 1980 Olympic Ski Jumping Championships at Lake Placid.

At Winter Park, Thor directed the Nordic program for 18 years, and was the first Vice President-Finance  and later Senior Vice President until his retirement in 1987.

The Rocky Mountain Ski Association awarded Thor the Halstead Memorial Trophy for outstanding service to the sport of skiing.
